Illawarra Women in Business (IWIB) has established itself as a premier networking platform, offering a welcoming environment where both women and men can cultivate meaningful connections. Since taking over the reins in 2007, directors Glenda Papac and Delyse Del Turco have steered the organisation with a clear mission: to help individuals build and strengthen their professional networks while fostering personal growth.
A Commitment to Subscribers
According to Glenda Papac, the organisation's success hinges on its unwavering focus on its subscribers. "IWIB is all about our subscribers, it's never been about me, or when Delyse was on board, it was never the 'Glenda and Delyse show'," she explained. "We never promoted ourselves or our own businesses. Everyone knew what we did and what businesses we were in. IWIB has always been about everyone else, I think that has been the key to its success."
This subscriber-centric approach has resonated deeply within the Illawarra community, creating a supportive ecosystem where women encourage and uplift one another. Glenda takes pride in witnessing the collaborations that emerge from IWIB events, from charity fundraisers to workshops that benefit the entire region.
Adapting During Challenging Times
When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted in-person gatherings, Glenda quickly pivoted to maintain connections. She launched online chats on IWIB's social media platforms under the banner "When Networking's Not Working." These virtual sessions not only featured local leaders but also brought back high-profile speakers from pre-pandemic events, including interviews with renowned figures such as Matt Moran, Turia Pitt, and Maggie Beer.
An Impressive Line-Up of Speakers
Over the years, IWIB has hosted an extraordinary array of speakers who have inspired attendees. The roster includes Dawn Fraser, Mark Bouris, Ian Thorpe, Matt Moran, Taryn Brumfitt, Michelle Payne, Neale Whittaker, Jana Pittman, Mitch and Mark, Lisa Curry, Jelena Dokic, and Turia Pitt, who has addressed the group on three separate occasions. These events have provided invaluable insights and motivation for businesswomen and entrepreneurs across the region.
Upcoming Event with Cathy Freeman
On November 27 this year, IWIB will bring Australian legend Cathy Freeman to the Illawarra for its annual IWIB Lunch. The event is open to all, and tickets are available through the IWIB website. This milestone lunch coincides with IWIB's 20-year anniversary, marking two decades of fostering business relationships and community spirit.
Community Support and Partnerships
The success of IWIB is also attributed to the steadfast support from local businesses. Relativity Films, for instance, has managed the visuals and audio at IWIB Lunch events since 2008, never missing a single gathering. Glenda acknowledges the broader Illawarra community as a driving force behind IWIB's achievements. "The Illawarra has women who encourage and support other women, women who are exceptional leaders and mentors and are there to openly help other women succeed," she said.
Celebrating Achievements
As IWIB celebrates this significant milestone, it also congratulates all finalists of the 2026 IWIB Business Women's Awards. The organisation looks forward to continuing its mission of empowering women in business for many years to come.
