Qantas Frequent Flyer Unveils Historic Overhaul with Status Credit Rollover
Qantas Frequent Flyer's Biggest Changes in 40 Years

Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Undergoes Historic Transformation

Qantas has unveiled the most substantial overhaul of its Frequent Flyer program since its inception nearly 40 years ago, marking a pivotal shift in how members earn and retain status. For the first time, more than 18 million members will gain the ability to rollover unused Status Credits and accumulate them through everyday spending activities.

According to an insider, these sweeping changes are the result of extensive feedback from thousands of frequent flyers and leading loyalty experts, heralding a new era for the program in response to an evolving loyalty landscape.

Key Changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program

The revamp introduces several groundbreaking features designed to enhance member flexibility and rewards:

  • Status Credits from Everyday Spending: Members can now earn up to 140 additional Status Credits annually across 10 categories, including Qantas credit cards and hundreds of program partners, following a successful trial in 2025.
  • Status Credit Rollover: Tiered members can rollover up to 50 percent of their excess Status Credits into the next membership year, with caps set at 100 for Silver, 350 for Gold, and 500 for Platinum members.
  • Enhanced Lifetime Benefits: Lifetime Gold members can earn and bank up to five complimentary years of Platinum Status for every 10,000 Status Credits earned beyond the Lifetime Gold threshold.
  • Improved Tier Perks: Silver members receive an additional lounge invitation each year, while all higher tiers gain access to new vouchers and discounts.
  • Simplified Program Structure: Overlapping sub-programs like Points Club and Green Tier are being retired, consolidating benefits into a single, streamlined pathway.
  • Unified Status Targets: Separate "attain and retain" requirements are eliminated in favor of a single Status Credit target for each tier level.
  • Advanced Digital Tools: A new search tool on qantas.com will help members find international Classic Reward seats on Qantas and partner airlines more efficiently.

Executive Insights on the Program Overhaul

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized that these changes aim to create more opportunities for members to unlock status while ensuring the program remains relevant and rewarding. "These changes are about creating more opportunities for members to unlock status, while ensuring the program remains as relevant and rewarding in the future as it has been for the past four decades," she stated.

Hudson believes the overhaul will deliver greater flexibility, faster recognition, and more pathways to status, noting that status retention is a critical milestone for frequent flyers.

Andrew Glance, Qantas loyalty and customer CEO, highlighted the significance of introducing Status Credit rollover and on-the-ground earning. "Around half of the status credits our members earn each year are over and above their tier thresholds," he explained. "We are giving value back, ensuring hard-earned status credits in one year give members a head start in the next."

He also pointed out that over 14,000 reward seats are booked daily, with the new search tool set to enhance customer access to these opportunities.

Detailed Breakdown of the New Features

The expansion of Status Credits on the ground, launching later in 2026, will include more major partners and count towards Lifetime tier balances, helping members achieve Lifetime status sooner. The Status Credit rollover benefit, also launching in 2026, replaces previous loyalty bonuses and offers permanent flexibility.

Enhanced lifetime milestones for Lifetime Gold members will debut in 2027, allowing them to bank Platinum status years. Additional tier benefits, such as the extra lounge invitation for Silver members, will be fully implemented by 2027, with more details to be announced.

The retirement of Points Club and Green Tier will occur gradually from late 2026, simplifying the program and integrating valued benefits. With Green Tier's phase-out, Qantas is exploring new ways to reward sustainable travel choices.

The move to single Status Credit targets will take effect in 2027, removing complexity from tier requirements. Meanwhile, the improved digital experience, including the new search tool, launches next month to provide faster access to reward seats across a 12-month booking period.
