Perth Traffic Snarls: Mitchell Freeway Breakdowns Cause Major Delays
Perth – A series of vehicle breakdowns on the Mitchell Freeway northbound created significant traffic congestion during Wednesday afternoon's peak hour, disrupting the commute for thousands of drivers heading home.
First Breakdown Near Gwelup
The initial incident occurred at 4:03 PM on the Mitchell Freeway before Reid Highway in Gwelup. A vehicle breakdown forced the closure of the right lane and emergency lane, with Incident Response teams quickly arriving at the scene to manage the situation. Traffic, already heavy due to peak hour volumes, slowed considerably leading up to the site, causing delays for motorists.
Main Roads WA issued a reminder for drivers to exercise caution when traveling through the affected area. The breakdown has since been cleared, but residual delays were reported as traffic gradually returned to normal flow.
Second Breakdown Further South in Innaloo
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, a second vehicle breakdown added to the traffic woes, shutting down the left lane of the Mitchell Freeway further south near the construction-ridden intersection at Stephenson Avenue in Innaloo. This incident completely blocked the left lane, leading to major congestion and slow-moving traffic in the vicinity.
Similar to the first breakdown, this situation has also been resolved, with the lane reopened and traffic conditions improving. However, the combined effect of both incidents highlighted the vulnerability of Perth's key arterial routes during peak travel times.
Impact on Commuters and Safety Reminders
The dual breakdowns underscore the challenges faced by commuters on busy stretches like the Mitchell Freeway, where even minor incidents can quickly escalate into significant traffic snarls. Main Roads WA continues to advise drivers to stay alert, reduce speed in congested areas, and follow directions from traffic management personnel to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
As Perth's population grows and traffic volumes increase, such incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and preparedness for unexpected delays on the road.
