Perth Airport Flights Disrupted as Middle East Conflict Escalates
West Australian travellers are facing ongoing disruptions as the conflict in the Middle East continues to impact air travel, with Perth Airport announcing six more flight cancellations on Tuesday. This brings the total number of affected services since Saturday to 21, highlighting the severe consequences of the war that began when Israel and the United States bombed Iran over the weekend.
Global Airspace Closures Strand Thousands
The initial missile strikes forced the closure of Qatari airspace, leading Emirates and Qatar Airways to suspend all flights to and from Dubai and Doha. While some services have resumed to assist stranded passengers, the situation remains volatile, with over 100,000 Australians still stranded overseas as of Tuesday. A Perth Airport spokesperson has urged affected passengers to contact their airlines directly for the latest updates and rebooking options.
Unprecedented Crisis for Australian Travellers
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong emphasised the scale of the disruption, noting that approximately 11,000 Australians travel through the Middle East daily, primarily via hubs like the United Arab Emirates. She described the situation as unprecedented, stating that the crisis has overwhelmed the usual support systems. Senator Wong acknowledged that a small number of commercial flights have managed to depart but warned that an immediate resolution is unlikely, leaving many in limbo.
Travel Advice for Stranded Passengers
In response to the chaos, travel authority Smartraveller has issued crucial guidance for Australians stranded abroad. They advise against voluntarily cancelling flights without first consulting a travel agent or airline, as this could jeopardise refunds or rebooking rights and may not be covered by travel insurance. With call centres overwhelmed, passengers are encouraged to wait for contact from their airline if travel is not imminent within 48 hours, while those with upcoming flights should proactively confirm their arrangements.
