Major Aviation Hub for Emergency Response Takes Shape at Jandakot
Construction is set to commence imminently on a groundbreaking purpose-built aviation headquarters at Jandakot Airport, designed to significantly enhance Western Australia's emergency response capabilities through aerial operations. The DFES Aviation Facility, representing a substantial investment in the state's emergency services infrastructure, will consolidate previously dispersed aviation units into a single, state-of-the-art complex.
Facility Specifications and Operational Benefits
The expansive new complex will cover more than 8,100 square meters and incorporate four dedicated hangars, comprehensive office accommodations, advanced training simulators, multiple training rooms, modern amenities, and specialized crew rest areas. This consolidation marks a strategic shift, as the DFES Aviation Services branch—encompassing the Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service and Air Operations—were previously operating from separate locations across the region.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm emphasized the operational advantages of the new facility, stating it will enable the RAC Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service and other departmental aerial assets to respond more effectively to emergency calls. "Since its inaugural flight in 2003, the Emergency Helicopter Rescue Service has completed nearly 11,000 critical missions, traversing almost 2.5 million kilometers across Western Australia to assist residents in need," Commissioner Klemm noted.
Strategic Investment in Aerial Fleet Management
The Western Australian State Government has committed $12.5 million to establish and fully equip the facility, which is projected to be operational by September of next year. This investment supports a fleet of over 40 specialized aircraft, including 38 aerial firefighting planes and three RAC Rescue Helicopters, with management and maintenance operations expected to become considerably more efficient from the centralized Jandakot location.
Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia highlighted the critical role of aviation in emergency response across the state's vast geography. "Aircraft have become indispensable assets for emergency services, responding to diverse incidents from bushfire suppression to complex rescue operations," Minister Papalia explained. "This facility will not only enhance emergency response and recovery times but also provide the flexibility to adapt to future advancements and expansions of the aerial fleet."
While the new Jandakot complex will serve as the primary hub, DFES will maintain aerial assets at other strategic locations throughout Western Australia to ensure comprehensive operational coverage and meet all emergency response requirements across the region.
