Avalon Airport descended into chaos on Thursday after a laser hair removal device and a hot chocolate container triggered a major security scare, leading to a mass evacuation, bomb squad response, and multiple flight cancellations that left hundreds of passengers stranded for hours.
What Happened at Avalon Airport?
The incident began at 5:47 am when a passenger checked a bag onto a Jetstar flight bound for Sydney. During security screening, the x-ray operator flagged an item as suspicious. Acting Inspector Nick Uebergang confirmed that security personnel saw something in the bag they believed to be a potential threat.
Police took no chances, deploying a bomb robot to survey the item while the terminal was evacuated. The passenger was also subjected to screening. Uebergang noted that the individual was not cooperative, providing little information to authorities.
Airport Shutdown and Passenger Ordeal
The entire airport was shut down, and all flights were grounded. Hundreds of stranded passengers were told to remain in their cars or wait outside in the cold as two morning flights to Sydney and Brisbane were cancelled. One passenger remarked that if a bomb were found, they would rather be on the ground than in the air. Another expressed unease at the thought that the suspect might have boarded the plane with them.
Resolution and Reactions
More than four hours later, the suspicious passenger was cleared, and the items were identified as a laser hair removal device and a hot chocolate container. When passengers learned the cause, they reacted with disbelief, saying, 'Oh, you're joking.'
The owner of the bag was baffled that his taste for hot chocolate led to such a scare. He described being strip-searched and having his phone examined, with one officer reportedly using profanity toward him. Police defended their response, stating that the passenger was uncooperative. The passenger countered that he was not obligated to provide more information than legally required.
Why the Bag Raised Suspicion
It was later revealed that the bag was flagged because of the unique shape of the two items when placed together. The hot chocolate container and the hair removal device were in the same bag, likely positioned next to or on top of each other. This combination of electronic components and tightly packed powder raised suspicion for the x-ray operator.
Flights were delayed by about three hours, leaving passengers frustrated but also relieved that security measures were thorough. Uebergang emphasized the importance of such precautions, while the affected passenger acknowledged the unpleasant experience.
Hot Chocolate Company Offers Compensation
In a light-hearted response, the hot chocolate company offered a free box of hot chocolate to all passengers whose flights were delayed or cancelled on Thursday, aiming to sweeten the ordeal.
