South Perth to Plant 850 Trees, Secures $60K for Greening

The City of South Perth is accelerating its urban greening initiatives this winter, planning to plant 850 new trees while securing nearly $60,000 in state government funding for community-led conservation projects. The funding, part of an election commitment and administered by the city, has been allocated to five local environmental and community groups to deliver projects across the city by the end of the year.

Community Projects Funded

Successful projects include bushland revegetation and weed removal at Como Secondary College and adjacent city-managed land, a new limestone path through Manning Bushland, bee and bug hotels with interpretive signage at Davilak Crescent Bushland, and a cockitrough. The funding aims to support revegetation, biodiversity, conservation education, and bushland improvements.

Mayor's Statement

Mayor Greg Milner said the projects would strengthen the city’s long-term environmental goals. “Together, these projects will enhance local biodiversity, improve access and infrastructure in bushland areas, support community education and engagement in conservation, increase climate resilience and enhance the liveability of our local neighbourhoods,” Mr Milner said. He noted that the projects align with the city’s urban greening strategy, which provides long-term direction for creating a healthy, resilient, and diverse urban environment through tree canopy expansion, revegetation, and habitat restoration initiatives.

Tree Planting Details

The city will plant 850 mature 35-litre trees across streets, parks, and public spaces by the end of winter. Of these, 481 are destined for residential streets, 95 for drainage sumps, and 274 for public reserves. Trees include native and locally suited species selected for their ability to thrive in local conditions. Residents can apply to the city for a street tree to be planted on their verge where space allows.

Volunteer Acknowledgment

South Perth MLA Geoff Baker acknowledged the contribution of local volunteers. “These grants recognise the immense work that volunteers do looking after the natural environment in South Perth,” he said.
