Melville Tennis Club Goes Solar with $105k Federal Grant for Net Zero
Melville Tennis Club Solar Upgrade for Net Zero

A Melville tennis club is making an environmentally-friendly switch to a new solar power system.

The Blue Gum Park Tennis Club has received $105,000 in Federal Government funding to install a 66kW DC solar system paired with a 96kW battery energy storage system.

WA-based solar provider Westsun Energy designed the system and installed it.

City staff and Federal Tangney MP Sam Lim gathered last Wednesday to celebrate the completed upgrades.

Commitment to Sustainability

Mayor Katy Mair said the new system showed the club’s commitment to adapting to climate change and would significantly improve its facilities’ sustainability and energy efficiency.

“I’m pleased to see the new solar system installed at the Blue Gum Tennis Club, which is a great outcome for the club and for the environment too,” she said.

“The City of Melville is committed to mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts, in line with our objective of transitioning our organisation to carbon neutrality by 2030 and facilitating community progress to net zero emissions across our local government area by 2050.

“The city is actively working to reduce emissions across its infrastructure while also educating the community to reduce emissions across its programs and services.”

Economic Benefits

Ms Mair said solar power was also economical for the tennis club.

“In line with these targets, the installation of this solar system will significantly reduce ongoing electricity costs for the Blue Gum Park Tennis Club, freeing funds for the club to spend on other programs and services,” she said.

The facility has 22 courts, including 10 grass courts that are available during summer and 12 floodlit hard and synthetic courts that are in play all year.
