New data from the Regional Australia Institute shows a record number of Australians are moving from capital cities to regional areas, with net internal migration reaching 40,000 in the past year.
Drivers of the Shift
The trend is largely fueled by housing affordability and the rise of remote work. According to the Institute's report, the median house price in regional areas is nearly half that of major cities, making them attractive for families and young professionals.
Chief Economist of the Regional Australia Institute, Dr. Kim Houghton, stated: "We're seeing a fundamental shift in where Australians choose to live, with lifestyle factors playing a bigger role than ever before."
Popular Destinations
Queensland's Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, and the NSW Northern Rivers region are among the top destinations. These areas have seen population growth rates of 2-3% annually, outpacing the national average.
The report also highlights a rise in moves to inland regional centers like Bendigo and Toowoomba, which offer a mix of urban amenities and rural charm.
Impact on Regional Communities
While the influx brings economic benefits, it also poses challenges such as increased housing demand and strain on infrastructure. Local councils are working to manage growth sustainably, with some introducing affordable housing initiatives.
Dr. Houghton added: "Regional areas need to plan for this growth to ensure they maintain the lifestyle that attracted people in the first place."
