A visitor to Yosemite National Park died after falling at Nevada Fall, park officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Incident Details
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the individual, whose identity has not been released, slipped on wet granite near the top of the 594-foot waterfall. Witnesses reported seeing the person lose footing and fall into the Merced River below. Park rangers and emergency responders recovered the body later that evening.
Response and Investigation
Yosemite National Park spokesperson Scott Gediman said the park is working with the Mariposa County Coroner's Office to investigate the death. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the visitor,” Gediman said. The area around Nevada Fall has been temporarily closed as officials conduct the investigation.
Safety Warnings
Nevada Fall, located along the popular Mist Trail, is known for its slippery conditions, especially during peak snowmelt season. Park officials urge visitors to stay on designated trails, avoid climbing on wet rocks, and exercise caution near water. According to the National Park Service, there have been 14 deaths at Yosemite's waterfalls since 2010, many resulting from slips or falls.
Impact on Visitors
The closure of the area may affect hiking plans for the summer season, but park officials emphasize that safety is the top priority. Visitors are encouraged to check for updates on trail conditions and closures before heading out.
