Co-op Faces 400% Fee Increase
The Canberra Student Housing Co-operative (CSHC) is battling a proposed 400% increase in land rent and potential eviction from its site in the inner-north suburb of Turner. The co-op, which has provided affordable accommodation for students since 1978, is facing a fee hike from $20,000 to $100,000 per year, imposed by the ACT government. The co-op's management committee says the increase is unsustainable and could force the closure of the 42-bed facility.
Eviction Threat Looms
In addition to the fee hike, the co-op has been issued with an eviction notice, requiring it to vacate the premises by December 2025. The government has stated that the land is needed for future development, but the co-op argues that it has not been given a fair opportunity to negotiate. "We've been left in the dark about the government's plans," said co-op president Emma Johnson. "We're fighting for the survival of affordable student housing in Canberra."
Impact on Students
The co-op houses 42 students, many of whom rely on the low-cost accommodation to afford university. Residents pay around $150 per week, significantly below market rates. If the co-op closes, students could face displacement and increased financial pressure. "This place is my home and my community. Losing it would be devastating," said resident Tom Williams.
Government Position
The ACT government has defended its decision, stating that the fee increase reflects market value and that the land is needed for broader community purposes. A spokesperson said, "We are working with the co-op to find a suitable alternative site, but the current arrangement is no longer viable." However, the co-op claims that no alternative has been offered.
Community Support
The co-op has launched a campaign to rally support, including a petition and public meetings. Local MP Andrew Leigh has expressed solidarity, calling for a fair solution. "Affordable student housing is essential for a thriving city," he said. The co-op is also exploring legal avenues to challenge the eviction.
