The ACT government has announced plans for a new college campus in Gungahlin, located next to Gold Creek High School in Nicholls. Education Minister Yvette Berry confirmed that planning work for the second Gungahlin college will commence, addressing growing demand for secondary education in the region.
In addition to the college plans, the ACT budget will allocate $39 million over five years to expand Majura Primary School by 300 places. The funding will also support the deployment of additional demountable classrooms across the ACT to accommodate rising student numbers.
Ms Berry also announced a further $14.8 million commitment to expand Margaret Hendry Primary School and construct a neighbouring high school in Taylor. This adds to $118 million previously allocated for the project. The new high school is scheduled to open in 2024 with capacity for 800 students, featuring specialist and general learning areas, a library, and an interactive learning centre.
The budget will fund three new demountable classrooms, referred to as 'modular learning centres', and reposition eight existing centres across the territory. Ms Berry noted that more families are choosing public schools, particularly in the inner north, and the expansion of Majura Primary School will provide up to 300 extra places for local students.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr is set to present the ACT budget to the Legislative Assembly on August 2.
