Born in 1942 in Melbourne, Hoare began his career as a history teacher at a local high school. He quickly became disillusioned with traditional teaching methods, which he felt failed to engage students. In the 1970s, he developed a new curriculum that encouraged students to analyze primary sources and form their own interpretations.
According to his family, Hoare described his approach as "teaching students to think like historians, not just memorize dates." His methods were initially controversial but gained widespread acceptance.
Influential Textbooks and Legacy
Hoare co-authored the landmark textbook series "Discovering History," which sold over 500,000 copies and was used in schools across Australia and New Zealand. The series introduced students to historical debates and multiple perspectives.
