A devastating unit fire in Sydney's east has claimed the life of a woman believed to be in her late 70s. The blaze broke out in a first-floor unit on Alison Road, Randwick, at approximately 3pm on Tuesday, NSW Police confirmed.
Fire crews respond to Randwick blaze
Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the flames, but the unit had sustained significant damage. Paramedics treated the woman at the scene, but she could not be revived. She is yet to be formally identified.
Another resident of the complex, a man aged in his 30s, was treated for smoke inhalation. Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Investigation underway, road closures in place
“A crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire is underway,” NSW Police said in a statement. “As emergency services work through the scene, road closures are in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area.”
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.
