Wanted Man Crashes Into Car Evading Police in Belconnen

A 20-year-old man wanted on an arrest warrant for alleged robbery and burglary offences was arrested after he allegedly ran a red light and crashed into another car while attempting to evade police in Belconnen on Wednesday, June 24.

Police Pursuit and Crash

ACT Policing officers spotted the man driving a white Holden Commodore through Belconnen at approximately 12:50pm. The man was known to be wanted, and officers began following the vehicle. Meanwhile, other officers prepared to deploy road spikes at the intersection of Kuringa Drive and the Barton Highway.

In an attempt to avoid the road spikes, the driver allegedly ran a red light at the intersection and collided with a Mercedes sedan. The impact caused damage to both vehicles, but no injuries were reported.

Arrest and Charges

After the crash, the man fled from the scene on foot but was apprehended by police following a short chase. He was taken into custody and will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 25. He has been charged with driving without due care, learner driver unaccompanied, and using an unregistered vehicle.

According to ACT Policing, the man was wanted on an arrest warrant for alleged robbery and burglary offences at the time of the incident.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the alleged crash, or of the white Holden Commodore bearing NSW registration FDJ98V in the Belconnen area, to come forward.
