A three-year-old boy who was allegedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in Cambridgeshire, UK, is no longer in critical condition, local police have confirmed.
Health Update and Incident Details
The toddler was attacked by at least one crocodile at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo last Thursday. He had been visiting the zoo with his family when a stranger allegedly threw him into the habitat housing multiple crocodiles. The zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped into the enclosure to rescue the child, according to The Sun. The boy sustained critical injuries and was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital.
On Monday, a police spokesperson told media: “The boy is no longer critical and is in a stable condition in hospital.”
Suspect Arrested and Bailed
Police arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. The suspect, who is believed to have learning disabilities and was on a trip to the zoo with carers, has been released on bail. Police reported he was “assessed as not being fit for interview.”
Zoo Closure and Statement
In a statement posted to social media, Johnsons of Old Hurst said its Tropical House, where the crocodiles are housed, would remain closed until further notice “out of respect to the family.” The statement added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today. If you have any questions about the incident, please direct inquiries to Cambridgeshire Police Constabulary. The rest of the site will remain open as normal.”
