New Orleans Man Dressed as Santa Arrested for Child Predation
Santa Costume Child Predator Arrested in New Orleans

New Orleans police have arrested a 54-year-old man who allegedly used a Santa Claus costume to lure children for sexual abuse, authorities announced Tuesday.

Arrest and Charges

Michael Johnson was taken into custody Monday evening at his home in the Gentilly neighborhood after a two-month investigation. He faces multiple counts of sexual battery of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Police say Johnson would dress as Santa Claus during neighborhood holiday events and private parties, gaining access to children. He is accused of inappropriately touching two victims, aged 7 and 9, between November 2024 and January 2025.

Investigation Details

The investigation began in February when the mother of one victim reported her daughter's disclosure to school officials. Detectives uncovered evidence linking Johnson to a second victim. Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick stated, “This individual exploited a symbol of joy and trust to commit heinous acts. Our detectives worked tirelessly to ensure he was removed from our streets.”

Johnson was previously convicted of indecent exposure in 2010 in Jefferson Parish, according to court records. He is currently being held at Orleans Parish Prison on a $500,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 15.

Community Reaction

The case has shocked the local community. Neighbors described Johnson as a quiet man who participated in annual holiday events. “He was always the Santa at the block party. We trusted him with our kids,” said resident Maria Gonzalez, 34. “It’s terrifying to think what was happening behind closed doors.”

Police are urging any other potential victims or witnesses to come forward. The NOPD has set up a dedicated tip line. “We believe there may be more children who have not yet come forward,” said Detective Sarah Thompson. “We encourage parents to speak with their children and contact us if they have any concerns.”

Legal Proceedings

Johnson’s attorney, public defender Robert Chen, declined to comment on the charges. District Attorney Jason Williams said his office will seek the maximum penalty. “We will prosecute this case aggressively to ensure justice for the victims and safety for the community,” Williams said in a statement.

If convicted, Johnson faces up to 40 years in prison for each count of sexual battery, plus additional time for indecent behavior. The case has also prompted calls for stricter background checks for individuals who work children's events.
