The parents of a 4-year-old boy who died in a car crash in Canberra are determined to keep his memory alive by establishing a charity foundation to support other families who have lost children in similar tragedies.
Details of the crash
The accident occurred on the Monaro Highway in Hume on the afternoon of 12 November 2022. The boy, named Levi, was a passenger in a car that collided with a truck. He died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services. His parents, Sarah and James, were also injured in the crash and were taken to hospital.
According to police, the truck driver was not injured and is assisting with the investigation. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but speed and weather conditions are being considered as factors.
Foundation to honour Levi's legacy
In the wake of their son's death, Sarah and James founded the Levi's Legacy Foundation. The organisation aims to provide financial and emotional support to families who have lost children in road accidents. "We want to turn our grief into something positive and help others who are going through the same pain," Sarah said.
The foundation has already raised over $50,000 through community donations and fundraising events. The funds are used to cover funeral costs, counselling services, and other expenses for affected families.
Community response
The Canberra community has rallied around the family, with hundreds of people attending a candlelight vigil in honour of Levi. Local businesses have also contributed, donating goods and services for fundraising auctions.
"The support we've received has been overwhelming," James said. "It shows how much Levi touched people's lives, even at such a young age."
Road safety awareness
Beyond supporting grieving families, the foundation also aims to raise awareness about road safety. The couple has called for improved safety measures on the Monaro Highway, including better lighting and reduced speed limits in certain areas.
"We don't want any other parent to go through what we have," Sarah said. "If we can save even one life by sharing Levi's story, it will be worth it."
Future plans
The foundation plans to expand its reach nationally, partnering with other organisations to provide resources for bereaved families. They are also working with local schools to implement road safety education programs.
"Levi's legacy will live on through the lives we help," James said. "We will never forget him, and we will do everything we can to make sure his memory brings hope to others."
