A 31-year-old Nicholls man has been charged following an alleged altercation with police in Gungahlin on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm when officers from the Gungahlin Police Station attempted to stop a motorcycle on Gundaroo Drive for a routine traffic check.
According to police, the rider failed to stop and a short pursuit ensued. The motorcycle was eventually located abandoned in a nearby car park, with the rider allegedly fleeing on foot. Police tracked the man to a residence in Nicholls, where he was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
Charges and alleged drug possession
The man has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resist arrest, and drug possession. Police allege he struck an officer during the scuffle, causing minor injuries. The officer did not require hospital treatment. Additionally, police claim to have found a small quantity of methamphetamine in the man's possession.
Acting Inspector Mark Rowley said, "This was a concerning incident where the offender showed a complete disregard for police and public safety. Our officers acted professionally to bring the situation under control without further harm."
Court appearance
The accused appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday, where he was granted bail with strict conditions, including a curfew and a ban on driving. He is scheduled to reappear in court next month. The motorcycle involved has been seized for forensic examination.
