Five teenagers have been injured, one critically, after a car struck a tree in northern New South Wales. Emergency crews responded to King George V Ave in East Tamworth around 8:40pm on Friday, where they discovered the injured teens.
Details of the Crash
Police stated that initial investigations indicate the sedan they were traveling in left the road before hitting a tree. A 17-year-old girl seated in the driver's-side back seat suffered critical head injuries, while a 17-year-old boy in the left-side back seat was ejected from the vehicle upon impact and sustained spinal injuries. Both were airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
Other Injuries and Hospitalization
Three additional occupants were taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, with police confirming their injuries are not life-threatening. Paramedics treated another 17-year-old girl for head and facial injuries; she was allegedly driving the car and holds a P1 license. She has undergone mandatory testing, according to police. A third 17-year-old girl, believed to be the front-seat passenger, escaped with relatively minor injuries, while a second 17-year-old boy, traveling in the middle rear seat, is being assessed for leg and back injuries.
Investigation Underway
“A crime scene has been established and specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) have been assisting local police,” they said. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
