At least four people have been confirmed dead and 159 are unaccounted for after a 12-story condominium building partially collapsed in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida, early Thursday morning. The collapse of the Champlain Towers South building occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time, trapping residents under tons of rubble.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed the death toll and the number of missing during a press conference. Rescue crews have been working through the night, using search dogs and listening devices to locate survivors. As of Thursday evening, 35 people had been rescued from the collapsed section of the building, while others were evacuated from the undamaged portion.
“We are doing everything possible to find and rescue people,” Levine Cava said. “We have a massive search-and-rescue operation underway, with over 80 units from multiple agencies.”
Building History and Concerns
The Champlain Towers South was built in 1981 and had 136 units. In 2018, an engineering report warned of “major structural damage” to the building’s concrete slab and noted that the waterproofing system was failing. The report, commissioned by the condo association, estimated that repairs would cost over $9 million. Residents had recently been assessed for these repairs, but work had not yet begun.
“There were concerns about the building’s integrity for years,” said a former resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We knew something needed to be done, but no one expected this.”
Survivors and Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the building came down. “It sounded like a bomb went off,” said one neighbor. “The whole building shook, and then there was this huge cloud of dust.”
Residents from the unaffected part of the building were evacuated and taken to a nearby hotel. Many are waiting for news of their loved ones. The Red Cross has set up a family assistance center.
Investigations and Response
The cause of the collapse is under investigation by local authorities and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Officials have not ruled out any potential causes, including structural failure, gas leak, or other factors.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for Miami-Dade County, allowing for additional resources to be deployed. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and offered federal assistance.
Community in Mourning
The collapse has sent shockwaves through the Surfside community, a tight-knit beach town. A memorial has been set up near the site, with flowers and messages of support. Local religious leaders have offered prayers and counseling.
“This is a tragedy of unimaginable proportions,” said Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett. “We are a small community, and we are all hurting. We will get through this together.”
