A shooting at the Chico library in Northern California on Wednesday left one person dead and another injured, with the suspect taken into custody, authorities said.
Details of the Incident
Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library around 2:30 p.m. local time. Officers arrived to find two people suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was apprehended a short distance from the library without incident, according to Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge. “We have one suspect in custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” Aldridge said in a statement.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. The library was evacuated and remained closed for the remainder of the day.
“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” said Chico Mayor Andrew Coolidge. “We are grateful for the swift response of our police department.”
Community Reaction
The shooting has shaken the community in Chico, a city of about 100,000 people. “It’s terrifying that something like this could happen in our library, a place where families come to learn and relax,” said local resident Maria Torres.
This incident adds to a growing number of public space shootings in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 200 mass shootings in the U.S. so far in 2026.
