Career bikie Troy Mercanti was ejected from Saturday night's West Coast Eagles game at Optus Stadium, despite watching the match peacefully and without causing any disturbance.

Police Use Liquor Law to Remove Bikie

Western Australian Police invoked a little-known provision of the Liquor Control Act to remove Mercanti from the venue, citing his status as a convicted criminal. Section 115 of the Act grants officers broad authority to determine who may remain on licensed premises, which includes Optus Stadium.

Mercanti was approached by police officers during the first quarter and instructed to leave the stadium immediately.

Lawyer Criticizes Police Action

Prominent lawyer Paul Holmes, representing Mercanti, questioned the motivations behind the police decision.

"Mr Mercanti was at Optus Stadium to enjoy a game of football. He was not accompanied by any individuals linked to outlaw motorcycle gangs," Mr Holmes stated.

"He was not wearing any club insignia. He was simply a member of the crowd. This is yet another instance of police diverting resources that could be better utilized elsewhere, using the Liquor Control Act to eject Mr Mercanti."

Mr Holmes further argued, "Surely it is time to examine the costs associated with police acting as a source of harassment. While police may have a particular interest in Mr Mercanti due to his association with the Mongols outlaw motorcycle club, there is a troubling blurring of lines between that interest and a person's right to go about their lawful business without police interference."
