Woman Raised Concerns to BBC About Ashley Cain Before Alleged Assault
A woman who alleges she was sexually assaulted by BBC presenter Ashley Cain had previously raised concerns about his behaviour directly to the BBC, according to a report by The Guardian. The disclosure raises fresh questions about the broadcaster's handling of safeguarding complaints.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told The Guardian that she contacted the BBC in 2022 to express unease about Cain's conduct. She claims that despite her warnings, the BBC did not take sufficient action, and she was later assaulted by Cain in 2023.
BBC Statement on the Allegations
A BBC spokesperson said: "We take all allegations of sexual misconduct extremely seriously. We have robust safeguarding procedures in place and we are reviewing the specific concerns raised." The spokesperson declined to comment on individual cases, citing ongoing investigations.
The allegations against Cain, a well-known presenter on BBC Radio 1, emerged earlier this month. Cain has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crime. He has stepped back from his on-air duties pending an internal investigation.
Details of the Alleged Assault
The woman alleges that Cain assaulted her at his London home after a party in March 2023. She said she had previously told BBC managers that Cain had made inappropriate comments to her and had asked her to keep their interactions secret. "I felt like I was being groomed," she told The Guardian. "I went to the BBC because I was scared, but they didn't stop him."
Questions Over BBC's Safeguarding
The case has sparked debate about the BBC's duty of care towards individuals who interact with its presenters. A former BBC executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "If concerns were raised and not acted upon, that is a serious failure. The BBC must ensure its processes are robust enough to protect people."
The BBC has faced similar criticisms in the past, including over its handling of complaints against the late Sir Jimmy Savile. In 2023, the broadcaster launched a new safeguarding unit to improve its response to allegations.
Police Investigation Ongoing
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against a man in his 30s, believed to be Cain. A spokesperson said: "Officers are working with the victim and the BBC to establish the full circumstances." No arrests have been made.
Cain's lawyer issued a statement saying: "Our client strenuously denies the allegations. He is cooperating fully with the police and the BBC investigation and is confident that he will be exonerated."
