Independent ACT MLA Leanne Castley has launched a new policy blog, reinforcing her pledge to remain independent and provide a direct line of communication with her constituents. The blog, titled "Castley's Canberra," aims to bypass traditional media and offer unfiltered insights into her work and policy positions.
Direct Engagement with Voters
Castley, who represents the electorate of Yerrabi, said the blog is part of her commitment to transparency and accountability. "I want people to see exactly what I'm doing and why," she said. "This is about cutting through the noise and giving residents a clear understanding of my priorities."
The blog will feature regular updates on local issues, her voting record, and detailed explanations of her stance on key matters such as cost of living, housing, and education. Castley emphasized that the platform will not be used for party-political messaging, as she is not aligned with any major party.
A New Approach to Representation
Since being elected in 2020, Castley has often found herself in the spotlight as a rare independent in the ACT Legislative Assembly. She has consistently voted against party lines when she believes it serves her constituents better. "My job is to represent the people of Yerrabi, not a party machine," she said.
Her decision to launch the blog comes amid growing disillusionment with traditional political communication. According to a 2023 survey by the Australia Institute, 62% of Australians feel that politicians do not communicate honestly with the public. Castley hopes her blog can help bridge that trust gap.
Policy Focus Areas
In her first blog post, Castley outlined her key policy priorities: reducing the cost of living, improving public transport, and advocating for more green spaces in Canberra's growing northern suburbs. She also addressed the controversial issue of light rail stage 2A, stating that while she supports public transport investment, she believes the current plan needs more scrutiny.
"We need to ensure every dollar spent delivers real benefits for commuters," she wrote. "I'll be pushing for a cost-benefit analysis that is transparent and independent."
Reactions and Future Plans
Political analysts have noted that Castley's move could set a precedent for other independents. Dr. Mark Evans, a political scientist at the University of Canberra, said, "By using digital tools to engage directly, independents can build a more personal connection with voters, which is often lacking in major party politics."
Castley plans to update the blog weekly and will also host live Q&A sessions on social media. She has also committed to responding to comments and questions posted on the blog within 48 hours. "This is a two-way conversation," she said. "I'm not just talking at people; I'm listening."
Her office confirmed that the blog will be maintained using existing resources, with no additional cost to taxpayers. Castley's move is seen as a strategic effort to solidify her independent brand ahead of the next ACT election, scheduled for 2024.
