Zelenskyy and Trump Make Progress on Ukraine Peace Deal but 'Thorny Issues' Remain

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump met at Mar-a-Lago to discuss a 20-point peace plan to end the war with Russia. Zelenskyy said 'great achievements' were made, but Trump noted one or two 'thorny issues' remain unresolved.

Zelenskyy stated that a security guarantee between the two countries was '100 per cent agreed,' while Trump said it was almost completely agreed. The leaders plan to meet with European counterparts, NATO, and EU leaders in the coming weeks to finalize matters.

Trump suggested that some land in Ukraine may be 'up for grabs' as part of the peace process, and that Ukraine should consider a land deal to avoid losing more territory. Discussions include establishing a 'special economic zone' in the Donbas, though Trump said that part is unresolved.

Trump held a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the meeting, describing it as 'productive.' Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin told Trump that a 60-day ceasefire proposed by the EU and Ukraine would prolong the war. Zelenskyy hopes to soften a US proposal for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from the Donbas.

Meanwhile, Russian attacks continue. Three guided aerial bombs struck Sloviansk overnight, killing one man and injuring three. The previous day, ballistic missiles and drones hit Kyiv, killing at least one and wounding 27. Trump said he believes Putin is 'very serious' about ending the war but acknowledged negotiations could fall apart.
