President Donald Trump has called for restraint after Israeli airstrikes targeted Beirut, urging all parties to de-escalate as his administration pushes for a peace deal with Iran. The strikes, which hit multiple locations in the Lebanese capital, have raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
US Calls for De-escalation
In a statement from the White House, Trump said the United States is closely monitoring the situation and has communicated with both Israeli and Lebanese officials. “We urge all sides to show restraint and avoid further escalation,” Trump said. “The path to peace requires calm and dialogue.”
The airstrikes, which Israel said targeted Hezbollah weapons sites, came amid heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border. Lebanese officials reported at least a dozen casualties, with buildings damaged in southern Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Push for Iran Deal
Trump’s call for restraint is tied to his broader diplomatic push for a comprehensive peace agreement with Iran. The president has long sought a deal that would curb Iran’s nuclear program and its influence in the region. “A stable Middle East requires addressing the root causes of conflict, including Iran’s destabilizing activities,” Trump added.
Critics, however, argue that the administration’s approach has been inconsistent, with some accusing Trump of emboldening Israel while simultaneously seeking talks with Tehran. The airstrikes have complicated efforts to restart negotiations, with Iran condemning the attacks and vowing retaliation.
International Reactions
The international community has reacted with alarm. The United Nations called for an immediate ceasefire, while European allies urged restraint. Russia, a key ally of Iran, warned that the strikes could trigger a broader war.
Lebanon’s government has condemned the airstrikes as a violation of its sovereignty and has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed to respond, raising the specter of a new round of hostilities.
As the situation remains fluid, Trump’s administration is walking a tightrope between supporting Israel and pursuing a diplomatic resolution with Iran. The coming days will test whether the president’s call for restraint can prevent a full-blown crisis.
