Prince William has expressed deep concern for the future of his three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, warning that their future is at risk unless urgent action is taken to address environmental challenges. The heir to the throne, speaking ahead of the fifth Earthshot Prize ceremony in Brazil, said his role as a father drives his commitment to the global environmental initiative.
In an interview with HELLO! magazine, William stated, 'As a father, I think constantly about the world my children will inherit. I want them to grow up surrounded by nature, opportunity and a sense of hope about the future. But I also know that unless we act boldly now, that future is at risk.' He added that the Earthshot Prize is about 'turning the tide' and proving to his children that he is willing to fight for their tomorrow.
The Prince of Wales arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Monday for the fifth anniversary of the Earthshot Prize, which he launched in 2020 with naturalist David Attenborough. The initiative awards five £1 million prizes annually to innovative solutions for the planet's most pressing environmental problems. William described Rio as 'the perfect place to celebrate the power of environmental innovation.'
William's wife, Princess Catherine, has also highlighted the importance of nature, sharing a Mother's Day message in March that called nature 'our sanctuary' during her cancer diagnosis and treatment. Jason Knauf, chief executive of the Earthshot Prize, noted that William is personally involved, often 'rolling up his sleeves' to support finalists.
The ceremony this week will feature performances by Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes, and William is expected to visit iconic Rio sites. As future king, he is anticipated to continue prioritizing environmental issues, refusing to 'give up on the planet.'
