The Mt Olive Pickle Company, a leading pickle vendor in the United States, has withdrawn from the Great American State Fair in Washington DC after North Carolina's exhibit displayed a video containing the Confederate flag. The company, based in eastern North Carolina and known as the top-selling brand of pickles, peppers, and relishes in the country, stated it was unaware the flag would appear in the exhibit.
Company Statement on Withdrawal
In a statement to local news station WNCT, Mt Olive Pickle Company explained: "Mt Olive Pickle Company was invited to participate in the North Carolina exhibit for the Great American State Fair … as part of America’s 250th celebration. We are proud of our North Carolina roots, and we agreed to be a part of an exhibit, as presented to us, that would represent the best of our great state. Our company stands on values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom."
Details of the Confederate Flag Display
The vehicle manufacturer Spevco, which also participated in North Carolina's booth, said the video was 45 minutes long, published on YouTube, and covered the state's history. The flag appeared for a few seconds, and that moment was captured in news footage that circulated widely, according to The News & Observer. A Spevco spokesperson said the company "did not create, produce, edit, approve or select this historical video to be shown." The video was subsequently removed from the booth.
Historical Context and Controversy
The Confederate battle flag, with its red field and blue X featuring white stars, has been adopted by white supremacist groups. The Confederacy defended slavery during the US civil war. Notably, North Carolina did not fly this specific flag while part of the Confederacy; the video showed it while the host discussed the state's flag history.
Fair's Broader Challenges
The Great American State Fair, a 16-day event associated with the Trump administration and Republican allies, has faced multiple issues. Low attendance and extreme heat, which sent at least seven people to the hospital, have plagued the festival. At least seven Democratic-governed states declined to participate, citing budget or scheduling constraints. North Carolina also initially declined for budgetary reasons but was represented after companies provided financing.
Heat-Related Adjustments
The Freedom 250 initiative, which organized the event, announced late Friday that the fair would open at noon on Saturday instead of 10am due to the heat. Other celebrations in Virginia, Maryland, Philadelphia, and DC were also affected, with parades canceled.
Irony in Pickle History
The withdrawal carries historical irony: Confederate troops were issued pickles and pickled vegetables as rations to prevent scurvy. The global pickle market is valued at over $26 billion in 2025, with the US share estimated at 35%, according to Fortune Business Insights.
Political Context of the 250th Birthday
On Friday, Donald Trump declared a nationwide scallops day, linked to a NOAA action to open fishing on Georges Bank. Trump said this would create jobs for east coast fishers. At Mount Rushmore, Trump spoke of communism as a "mortal threat to American liberty." Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, appeared to reference Trump as an authoritarian, stating, "Those ideals upon which our nation was built – they are strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime, but only if we reach for them."
