A massive explosion at a fireworks factory in northern Malta sent shockwaves through the town of Naxxar early Monday morning. The blast, which occurred around 6:30 a.m. local time, rattled homes, shattered glass windows, and prompted residents to flee the area, as captured in dramatic footage.
No Workers at Factory During Blast
Fortunately, no workers were present at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory at the time of the explosion, and no serious injuries were reported. Two men in nearby fields sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized, primarily being treated for shock, according to Sunrise reports. A food courier also suffered minor injuries. Tragically, four cows were killed in the incident, as reported by The Times of Malta.
Blast Registered as 1.9 Magnitude
The explosion registered as a 1.9 magnitude seismic event, according to Sunrise. Shocking footage captured two major blasts in quick succession, with debris and destruction visible across the town. Emergency services responded swiftly, evacuating tourists and locals from the area.
Factory Location and Response
The fireworks factory in Salina is situated in a rural and residential zone, surrounded by farmland, resorts, a bird park, and historic landmarks such as temples and castles. The blast caused significant damage to nearby properties, but emergency crews managed the situation without further casualties.
