Graham Platner, a Marine veteran, oyster farmer, and progressive activist, has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Maine. In the primary election held on Tuesday, Platner won a decisive 72% of the vote, defeating Governor Janet Mills, who had suspended her campaign in April but remained on the ballot.
Controversies During the Campaign
Throughout the campaign, Platner faced intense scrutiny over several issues. Old Reddit posts containing incendiary language were uncovered, as well as a tattoo that resembles a Nazi symbol. Additionally, sexually explicit messages sent to other women early in his marriage came to light, and a former girlfriend accused him of being physically intimidating, an allegation Platner has denied.
General Election Showdown
Platner will now face incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November general election. Collins is seeking a sixth six-year term in a race widely considered a must-win for Democrats aiming to gain control of the Senate, where Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority.
Despite the controversies, Platner has managed to rally support from key Democratic figures in Maine. The primary results also highlighted the ongoing influence of former President Donald Trump within the Republican Party, as he reaffirmed his grip on the GOP after several primaries.
The Maine Senate race is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests in the country, with implications for the balance of power in Washington.
