Egypt Coach Hossam Hassan Accepts Police Apology

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has stated that he considers the matter resolved after he and team director Ibrahim Hassan were involved in a physical confrontation with a police officer at the team's hotel in Dallas. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, was captured on video and circulated online, showing both men arguing with a Dallas police officer over an interaction involving a player and a young fan in the hotel lobby.

Details of the Confrontation

The video shows the officer approaching Hossam Hassan first, but the situation escalated into a shoving match with Ibrahim Hassan, who appeared upset by the officer's intervention. The altercation took place a day before Egypt's crucial round of 32 match against Australia at the World Cup. Dallas police later issued a statement explaining that officers were responding to a request from hotel security regarding an individual without event credentials attempting to gain access. The statement confirmed that the issue was resolved at the scene, and police met with Egyptian representatives to address their concerns.

Hossam Hassan's Response

Speaking through a translator, Hossam Hassan said the team had accepted an apology from the police. "We are really happy to be here at this tournament and we are satisfied with the security personnel that are accompanying us," Hassan said. "I would like to point to the high-level organization we have with us and the level of security we have with us." He emphasized that the team has moved on from the incident and is focused on the tournament.

Celebration with Palestine Flag

Hassan, who is the first person to both play for and coach Egypt at a World Cup, celebrated his country's first knockout victory by waving a Palestinian flag on the pitch after defeating Australia on penalties. "My heart and soul are with them," he said in an emotional post-game interview. Yahia Qalash, the former head of Egypt's Journalists' Union, described the gesture as "the most significant scene" and "a telling scene in an exceptional moment." On Friday, Hassan dedicated the game to the "good and noble" Egyptian and Palestinian people.

FIFA's Position on the Flag

When asked about the Palestinian flag, FIFA stated that it is permitted to display it at the World Cup. A spokesperson confirmed that "flags representing all 211 FIFA member associations are permitted at FIFA tournaments." There was no indication of any disciplinary action being taken against Hassan for his display.
