Cyclist rescues four from drowning in Ruhr River

Local authorities have issued a renewed warning about the dangers of rivers and streams, particularly for non-swimmers, after a cyclist rescued four members of a family who nearly drowned in the Ruhr River in Germany. The family of eight was enjoying a waterside barbecue in the western city of Bochum when the gathering turned into a crisis.

The Incident

According to the local fire brigade, one woman got too close to the water’s edge and fell into the current. Another woman who tried to help her also lost control. Two more relatives rushed in to assist, but all four—who could not swim—ended up in jeopardy, unable to pull themselves to dry land despite the relatively shallow water at that point.

A cyclist who is also a doctor rode past and immediately recognized the danger. The fire brigade spokesperson said she “stepped in decisively” and dragged each victim out of the water. She administered first aid to an unconscious woman, who survived. All four victims were rescued successfully.

Emergency Response

A family member alerted authorities. Emergency services transported one woman to hospital for immediate medical attention, while the other three had minor injuries. The German Life Saving Association dispatched a boat to the site. The rescue operation took nearly two hours due to the traumatic nature of the event. “The relatives were deeply shaken,” the fire brigade spokesperson said.

Investigation and Warnings

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. The local DLRG chapter and fire brigade reiterated warnings about river risks, especially for non-swimmers. “Currents, steep banks and cold water temperatures can put even experienced people in danger,” the fire brigade stated, noting that swimming in the Ruhr is considered life-threatening due to unpredictable currents. They advised sticking to designated and supervised bathing areas.

Last month, a 14-year-old boy drowned in the Ruhr in Essen, about 24 miles west of Bochum. The recent heatwave in parts of Europe led to a spate of drownings in the UK and France. The Royal Life Saving Society UK urged the public to “stop and think” before entering water, warning that warmer weather increases accidental drownings.
