Dermot Murnaghan, the veteran British news presenter who anchored programs for Sky News and the BBC over a career spanning more than 40 years, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed he passed away peacefully at his home in London on July 10, 2026, after a short illness.

Murnaghan was best known for presenting the flagship Sky News at Ten from 2005 until his retirement in 2018. Before joining Sky, he spent 15 years at the BBC, where he fronted BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten, as well as the BBC Weekend News. He also presented the BBC's Newsnight and Panorama programs.
According to a Sky News spokesperson, Murnaghan was "a master of his craft, whose calm authority and sharp wit made him a trusted voice in millions of homes." He was known for his ability to handle breaking news with composure, including the 9/11 attacks and the 2005 London bombings.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1948 in Dublin, Ireland, Murnaghan grew up in a journalistic family. His father was a newspaper editor, and his uncle was a well-known Irish broadcaster. He studied English literature at University College Dublin before beginning his career in local newspapers in Ireland. He moved to the UK in the 1970s, working for the Press Association and then as a producer for ITN before moving in front of the camera.
Impact and Legacy
Murnaghan was known for his distinctive voice and measured delivery. He interviewed numerous world leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, and Nelson Mandela. In 2012, he was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting. Colleagues described him as a mentor to young journalists and a man of great integrity.
His death prompted tributes from across the news industry. BBC director-general Tim Davie said: "Dermot was one of the most respected broadcasters of his generation.
