At least 11 people have died and dozens more have been wounded in a fresh wave of major Russian strikes on Ukraine, with the capital Kyiv among the cities hit. Local authorities confirmed that at least 11 people were killed and over 100 were injured in the attacks, which targeted Ukraine's power supply and infrastructure.
Strikes Across Ukraine
In Kyiv, overnight strikes killed four people and wounded 58, including children, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. A suspected missile strike on a 24-storey apartment building caused a collapse, leaving people likely trapped under the rubble. A nine-storey apartment block was also set ablaze by suspected missile debris. Fires broke out in the Obolon district, with cars burning after being struck by falling debris, and two other fires in open areas, including one near a kindergarten.
Thousands of residents sought shelter in the Kyiv subway system early Tuesday, carrying belongings and mattresses, as the sound of air defense systems repelling Russian attacks filled the air. More explosions were heard after dawn, according to a Reuters witness.
Dnipro and Kharkiv Under Attack
In the southeastern city of Dnipro, six people were killed and 36 injured in missile and drone attacks, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported. All injured were hospitalized in moderate condition. Pictures showed destroyed residential buildings, burnt-out vehicles, and a damaged children's playground.
In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a child was among 10 people injured in drone and missile attacks, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Air raid warnings sounded over much of the country early Tuesday after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a possible major assault.
Russia Also Under Attack
Russian regions also faced drone attacks. The Ilsky oil refinery in the southern Krasnodar region caught fire after a drone strike. In the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, an 11-year-old boy was injured when a Ukrainian drone hit a home. Russia's defense ministry claimed to have downed 148 Ukrainian drones overnight, and air defense systems were repelling attacks over Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea.
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian oil facilities this year, while Russia has targeted Ukraine's power grid. Both sides deny targeting civilians. Last week, the Kremlin warned of systematic strikes on Kyiv in response to a drone attack on a dormitory in Russian-held Luhansk that killed 21, an attack Ukraine denied.
The war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, continues with little progress toward a resolution. The administration of US President Donald Trump has focused on conflicts in the Middle East.
