Ukrainian Journalist Shocked by US Fracturing After 20 Years
Ukrainian Journalist Shocked by US Fracturing

As a Ukrainian journalist, I have covered the United States for the past 20 years. I find it increasingly shocking. My country has been under occupation, dogged by corruption and war. Yet even I have been bewildered by the way the US seems to be fracturing.

A Perspective from Ukraine

Having witnessed my own nation's struggles, I never expected to see such deep divisions in the United States. The political landscape, the social unrest, and the erosion of democratic norms have left me stunned. In Ukraine, we know what it means to fight for sovereignty and unity. Seeing the US, a beacon of democracy, grapple with internal strife is both alarming and disheartening.

Covering the US for Two Decades

For 20 years, I reported on American politics, from the Obama administration to the Trump era and now Biden. I have seen the country evolve, but never have I witnessed such polarization. The rise of populism, the spread of misinformation, and the deepening cultural divides are reminiscent of the fractures I have seen in other nations, but never expected here.

The Trump Era's Legacy

The Trump presidency amplified existing tensions. His rhetoric and policies often deepened racial, economic, and political divides. The January 6th Capitol riot was a stark reminder of how fragile democratic institutions can be. Even after his departure, the wounds remain raw, and the nation continues to grapple with its identity.

Biden's Challenge

President Joe Biden inherited a deeply divided country. His efforts to unite Americans face significant obstacles. The ongoing debates over voting rights, immigration, and economic inequality highlight the challenges of bridging the gap. As an outsider, I see a nation struggling to find common ground.

Lessons from Ukraine

In Ukraine, we have learned that unity is essential for survival. Our fight against corruption and external aggression has taught us the value of collective purpose. The US, despite its strengths, seems to be losing that sense of shared destiny. It is a warning sign for democracies worldwide.

A Call for Reflection

As I continue to report on America, I hope for a return to the principles that once made it a model for the world. But the path forward requires introspection, compromise, and a commitment to democratic values. The world is watching, and the stakes have never been higher.
