Two Canberra residents took down Neo-Nazi propaganda stickers from buildings in the city centre on Friday, expressing shock and anger at the material. Dave McCarthy discovered a sticker promoting the Hitler Youth on the Canberra Theatre, followed by another on the Canberra Museum and Gallery sign. He shared a Facebook post urging others to destroy any similar stickers.
In response, Augustine Bamberry searched the area and removed several more stickers from poles along City Walk and Ainslie Place. 'It just makes me angry because Nazis have no place in Canberra, Australia or anywhere else,' Bamberry said.
The stickers were attributed to the Neo-Nazi group Antipodean Resistance, which has previously described itself as 'the Hitler you've been waiting for'. The group has been involved in controversial activities, including attempts to influence the same-sex marriage postal vote and plastering posters on university campuses.
ACT Policing stated they were aware of the stickers and were making inquiries. A police spokeswoman reminded the community that vilification is prohibited under the ACT Discrimination Act 1991 and the ACT Criminal Code 2002, and defacing property is an offence. She urged anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
