G7 Leaders Pledge Unwavering Support for Ukraine at Summit in France
G7 Leaders Pledge Unwavering Support for Ukraine

Despite initial concerns about Donald Trump's stance, G7 leaders meeting in France have agreed on a statement declaring their 'unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.'

The statement, released overnight, commends Ukraine for its resilience and battlefield progress, noting a new momentum. To accelerate this, leaders agreed to increase air defence capacities, additional systems and interceptors, and long-range capabilities. They are also considering extending licenses to boost Ukraine's military production.

In a move reminiscent of the Trump era, the statement includes praise for the US president to keep him on side: 'We commit to increase the pressure on the Russian war economy. We will strengthen our sanctions, including on oil and gas sectors. We consider this the right moment for additional measures, as president Trump has delivered a deal we support in reopening the Strait of Hormuz.'

Today's talks will focus on economic growth and AI, with leaders meeting OpenAI and Anthropic bosses. Later, French President Emmanuel Macron will host Trump at the Palace of Versailles for the 250th anniversary of US independence. Trump described it as 'a real deal' and expressed enthusiasm.

Separately, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will speak ahead of tomorrow's defence ministers meeting, with the Ankara summit looming, where keeping Trump on side will be key.
