Protests in Albania over a proposed luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, are expected to intensify after opponents rejected an offer from the country’s prime minister to discuss solutions. Footage showed police firing water cannon at protesters as thousands of people took to the streets of Tirana for a third day on Wednesday. Some demonstrators held inflatable flamingos to symbolize the environmental damage they fear the project could cause, amid growing calls for it to be blocked.
Background of the Controversy
The resort is planned for an area that includes the uninhabited outcrop of Sazan, Albania’s largest island, as well as wetlands and coastal habitats within the surrounding marine national park. Critics argue that the development would irreversibly harm the unique ecosystem, threatening local wildlife and biodiversity. In January, Ivanka Trump made a surprise visit to the country with a team of architects, touring the site earmarked for development by her husband’s investment firm, Affinity Partners.
Government Response and Escalation
Prime Minister Edi Rama offered to meet with protest leaders to find a compromise, but the offer was rejected. Demonstrators insist that the project must be scrapped entirely. The protests have drawn attention to broader issues of foreign investment and environmental protection in Albania, with many citizens voicing concerns about transparency and the influence of political connections.
The clashes on Wednesday marked a significant escalation, with police using water cannon to disperse the crowd. Organizers have vowed to continue the demonstrations until their demands are met. The international community is closely watching the situation, as it highlights tensions between economic development and conservation in the Balkans.
