Irish fashion designer and artist Richard Malone has been commissioned to design the official logo for Ireland's presidency of the Council of the European Union, which begins in July 2027. The logo, unveiled on Friday, features a stylized harp intertwined with the European Union's circle of stars, symbolizing Ireland's cultural identity and its role within the EU.
Design Concept and Symbolism
Malone's design incorporates the traditional Irish harp, a national symbol, with the 12 stars of the EU flag. The harp strings are depicted as flowing lines that merge into the starry circle, representing connectivity and collaboration. According to Malone, the logo aims to reflect Ireland's commitment to European values while celebrating its unique heritage. “I wanted to create something that felt both contemporary and rooted in Irish history,” Malone said in a statement.
Ireland's EU Presidency Priorities
Ireland will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU for six months, focusing on key issues such as climate action, digital transformation, and social inclusion. The presidency will oversee legislative negotiations and set the agenda for EU meetings. The logo will be used on official documents, websites, and promotional materials throughout the term.
Richard Malone's Background
Malone, originally from County Wexford, is known for his sustainable fashion designs and collaborations with artists. His work often explores Irish identity and social issues. This is his first major commission for an EU institution. The selection process involved a competitive tender, with Malone chosen for his innovative approach and ability to convey complex ideas through design.
Reception and Future Use
The logo has received positive feedback from Irish officials and EU representatives. Minister for European Affairs Thomas Byrne described it as “a perfect representation of Ireland's role in Europe.” The design will be displayed at EU events and on official merchandise during the presidency.
