German riot police clashed with protesters outside a far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party conference on Saturday, resulting in multiple injuries and arrests. The confrontation occurred as thousands of demonstrators gathered to oppose the party's gathering in the city of Essen.
Violence Erupts at Protest
Police reported that approximately 50 officers were injured, with 30 protesters also hurt during the clashes. Authorities arrested at least 20 individuals for various offenses, including assault and resisting arrest. The protest, which drew an estimated 5,000 participants, was largely peaceful until a group of masked individuals began throwing stones and bottles at police lines.
According to police spokesperson Markus Weber, "The situation escalated rapidly when a small group of agitators attempted to break through our barriers. We were forced to use water cannons and batons to maintain order."
AfD Conference Underway
The AfD party conference proceeded inside the venue, with delegates discussing policy positions on immigration and the European Union. Party leader Tino Chrupalla condemned the protests, stating, "We will not be intimidated by violent extremists. Our democratic right to assemble must be respected."
However, critics argue that the AfD's rhetoric has fueled division and extremism. Political analyst Dr. Hannah Müller noted, "The party's anti-immigrant stance has created a tense atmosphere, and these protests reflect deep societal rifts."
Impact on Local Community
The clashes disrupted traffic and businesses in central Essen, with several shops closing early as a precaution. Local resident Klaus Richter expressed frustration: "We understand the right to protest, but this violence affects everyone living here. It's not safe to walk the streets."
Police have set up a hotline for witnesses to provide footage of the incidents and are reviewing CCTV recordings to identify additional suspects. The city has deployed extra security measures for the remainder of the conference, which is scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
