Residents across the Australian Capital Territory are set to benefit from nbn's full fibre upgrade, which promises more reliable internet for activities such as working from home, streaming, and video calling. The upgrade is part of a national program supported by the Australian Government, aiming to connect around 97,000 ACT homes and businesses from older copper-based Fibre to the Node technology to Fibre to Premises, subject to eligibility.
nbn has appointed Ventia to deliver upgrade works in North Canberra and Service Stream in South Canberra. Phase one, which began in September 2025, involved surveying and design in selected suburbs. In February 2026, the project moved to the construction phase, where physical fibre infrastructure is being installed to connect street networks directly to individual properties.
The upgrade uses a hybrid approach, with underground builds for most premises and aerial upgrades only where necessary. nbn and its delivery partners aim to minimise disruption, though minor impacts such as garden disturbance or temporary power interruptions may occur. In rare cases, backyard aerial connections will be used where underground installation is not feasible.
Once complete, eligible households and businesses can choose an nbn full fibre plan from their preferred internet provider. nbn full fibre is shown to be around six times more reliable than older copper-based technologies and can support download speeds up to 20 times faster where available. nbn is also working with the ACT Government to protect trees during installation.
