A viral Chinese app originally named 'Are You Dead' has been rebranded to Demumu after topping paid app charts in China and Australia. The app, designed for people living alone, alerts emergency contacts if a user fails to check in within a set time.
Developer Guo Mengchu said the name change aimed to avoid controversy and facilitate global expansion. The app reached third place among paid utilities in Australia this week, following its number one spot in Chinese app stores last week.
Guo noted the app's value surged from 1 million yuan to over 10 million yuan in days. He explained that 'de' in the new name abbreviates death, while 'mumu' is a playful nonsense word.
Dr. Wang Pan, a scholar at the University of New South Wales, linked the app's popularity to China's rising number of solo dwellers, estimated at 300 million single people aged 20-40 in 2024. She said it reflects growing social disconnection and insecurity among young urbanites.
User reactions have been mixed. Some praised the concept, while others on social media questioned its practicality, suggesting smartwatch pulse monitors as alternatives. The app's success has also spawned copycats like 'Are You Alive?' and 'U Dead?'.
