Jannik Sinner launched his Wimbledon title defence with a commanding straight-sets victory over Portugal's Nuno Borges on Centre Court, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in just one hour and 38 minutes.
Dominant Performance from the Start
The world No. 1, who claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the All England Club last year, showed no signs of the hip injury that had sidelined him in recent weeks. Sinner broke Borges's serve in the fourth game of the first set and never looked back, dropping only six games in the entire match.
“I felt good out there. It's always special to come back as defending champion,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “The crowd was amazing and I'm happy with how I played.” The Italian hit 32 winners and committed just 12 unforced errors, while Borges managed only 13 winners.
Borges Unable to Find Rhythm
Borges, ranked 69th in the world, struggled to cope with Sinner's pace and precision. The 27-year-old Portuguese saved three break points in the opening game but was broken twice more in the second set. Sinner closed out the match with a love hold, sealing victory with an ace.
This was the first meeting between the two players on grass. Sinner improved his career record at Wimbledon to 12-2, while Borges fell to 0-2 at the championships.
Road Ahead for Sinner
Sinner will face either Diego Schwartzman or Alexei Popyrin in the second round. The defending champion is bidding to become the first man to retain the Wimbledon title since Novak Djokovic won four in a row from 2018 to 2022. Djokovic, now 37, is seeded second and is also in the top half of the draw.
“Every match is a new challenge,” Sinner added. “I have to stay focused and take it one match at a time.” The Italian has won 32 of his 37 matches this season, including titles at the Australian Open and Miami Open.
