Swan Ends British Drought with Straight-Sets Win

Katie Swan marked her return to the All England Club after three years with a battling 6-4, 6-4 victory over Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu on Court 16. The 27-year-old wildcard became the first Briton to reach the second round at Wimbledon 2026, ending a dismal opening day that saw 10 home players lose their matches.

Swan, who had been sidelined by persistent back injuries that threatened her career, showed composure in a tight first set. Neither player created a break point until the ninth game, when Swan forced Begu into an error during a long rally and served out the set to love.

Momentum Carries Swan Through Second Set

Carrying that momentum, Swan broke early in the second set with a delicate cross-court drop shot after an exhausting exchange. She remained untouchable on serve, dropping just one point across her first three service games and never facing a break point. Although Begu saved four match points, Swan sealed the win with a final surge, punching the air in celebration.

Boulter Falls to Teenage Qualifier

Earlier on Court Three, British No. 1 Katie Boulter suffered a shock 6-4, 6-2 defeat to 18-year-old qualifier Tyra Caterina Grant. Boulter, who showed strong form at the Queen's tournament, struggled against Grant's fearless baseline play. Grant, making her Grand Slam main-draw debut, broke Boulter for a 2-1 lead and served superbly, winning key points behind her second serve.

Boulter's first-serve percentage dropped to 44% in the second set, with three double faults compounding her difficulties. She failed to earn a single break point, while Grant wrapped up the match in straight sets. The Italian qualifier has now won eight of her last 10 matches, including three qualifying wins at Wimbledon.

British Contingent Faces Mixed Fortunes

While Swan's victory provided a bright spot, Boulter's early exit added to the gloom surrounding the British contingent. The home crowd had high hopes for Boulter after her Queen's performance, but Grant's composed display proved too strong. Swan now advances to the second round, where she will face a higher-ranked opponent.
