Coco Gauff suffered a surprising defeat in her singles match against Spain's Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro at the United Cup in Perth on Monday. The world number four committed 54 unforced errors and 14 double faults, losing 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0.
Taylor Fritz leveled the tie for the United States with a hard-fought 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 7-6 (8/6) victory over world number 38 Jaume Munar. The match lasted three hours and 13 minutes, with Fritz saving a match point in the third-set tiebreak.
The tie came down to mixed doubles, where Gauff partnered Christian Harrison to defeat Yvonne Cavallé-Reimers and Íñigo Cervantes 7-6 (7/5), 6-0, securing a quarterfinal berth for the US.
Gauff admitted she used the bathroom to compose herself after her singles loss, saying, 'I had a lot of confidence in Taylor, so I was just trying to make sure that I was ready for the mixed.'
Fritz, who has been managing knee tendonitis, said his knee held up well during the match. 'I felt like my pain level stayed kind of at that starting point, so I was able to continue playing the whole match,' he said.
