Amanda Anisimova launched her Wimbledon redemption campaign with a commanding straight-sets win, while Elina Svitolina was sent crashing out in the first round in a major upset on the opening day.
Anisimova Dominates on Centre Court
Anisimova, who reached the semifinals here in 2019 before a period of personal struggle and a hiatus from the sport, showed no signs of rust as she dispatched her opponent 6-2, 6-3 in just 68 minutes. The American, now ranked 52nd in the world, fired 25 winners and broke serve four times to set up a second-round clash with compatriot Madison Keys.
“It feels amazing to be back on this court and to play the way I did,” Anisimova said after the match. “I’ve been through a lot, but I’m just taking it one match at a time and enjoying every moment.”
Svitolina Stunned by Qualifier
In contrast, Elina Svitolina, the 19th seed and a former semifinalist at Wimbledon, was eliminated by world No. 121 Jodie Burrage in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 defeat. The Ukrainian, who had been in strong form on grass this season, struggled with consistency, committing 38 unforced errors.
Burrage, a British qualifier playing her first Wimbledon main draw, delighted the home crowd with a fearless display, saving 7 of 10 break points. “I just can’t believe it,” Burrage said. “To beat a player like Elina on this court is a dream come true.”
Other First-Round Results
Elsewhere, defending champion Elena Rybakina advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shelby Rogers, while Coco Gauff cruised past Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-1. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record-extending 24th Grand Slam with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Pedro Cachin.
Anisimova’s win marks a significant step in her return to form after taking a break from tennis in 2023 to focus on her mental health. The 22-year-old has spoken openly about her struggles and her desire to rediscover her love for the game.
