Royle, who announced his retirement prior to the event, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to compete alongside Australia's finest. 'There's truly some of the best athletes in Australia and the world have come here and won this, and it's an honour to be on that honour roll,' he said. 'To join some of the greats and some of my heroes as a younger guy.'

The triathlete was visibly moved as he spotted his parents in the grandstand during the final stretch. 'I was running down the finish chute and I saw my mum and dad in the grandstand,' Royle recalled. 'They've been my biggest supporters, all through my junior years.'
