Surfing WA is set to host a Women in Surfing Celebration this Saturday, June 13, in Trigg to acknowledge the significant progress in women's participation in the sport and to inspire a new generation of surfers.
Event highlights pathways for women
The event aims to shine a light on the numerous opportunities now available to women in the surfing industry, both inside and outside the water. The celebration will be divided into two distinct sessions, each designed for a different audience.
The morning session, from 7am to 9am, will feature a conversation-style breakfast focused on themes of belonging, confidence, community, and the transformative power of the ocean.
The sundowner session, running from 5pm to 8pm, will be an evening celebration centered on possibilities, pathways, and the future of women in surfing, bringing together the wider community.
Guest speakers and rising talent
The event will gather past, present, and future voices of women in surfing, with guest speakers Jodie Cooper and Lizzie Nunn leading the sessions. Olive Hardy, a rising junior talent, will join the sundowner session.
Ms. Cooper expressed her delight at seeing girls and women entering surfing with more support, respect, and greater pathways than ever before. She noted that surfing has changed dramatically since her early days, when women were often treated as an afterthought and had to fight hard to be taken seriously. She emphasized that the celebration is about recognizing how far the sport has come and ensuring the next generation knows there is a place for them in the lineup and in the sport, in whatever way they choose.
While the Women in Surfing Celebration is free to attend, places are limited, so registration is essential due to capacity constraints. More information can be found online at surfingwa.com.au.
