Local artist Mitch 'Revs' Resevsky is painting a 40-square-metre mural at the Merewether Surf Life Saving Club to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Surfest. The artwork will feature iconic coastal sights, including surfers, hang gliders, the board riders club, ocean baths, and local wildlife.
Resevsky said he wanted to create a vibrant piece reflecting the fun and excitement of Surfest. 'It features all walks of life doing their thing, surfing, having fun, walking dogs, playing on the rocks, doing family activities,' he said. He learned to surf at Merewether beach and aims to capture the community and visitors.
Surfest organiser Warren Smith noted the mural is part of a four-month festival with over 800 competitors from across the globe in nine events through February and March. The celebrations culminate with the World Surf League's Challenger Series at Merewether from March 9 to 15.
Resevsky has spent two hot days on colour blocking and expects to finish by the 20th. Funding came from City of Newcastle council, which has supported Surfest since 1985. Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz said the event has boosted tourism and helped Newcastle evolve from its industrial roots.
